I've started on Japanesepod101 and was really pleased at first, but they've now almost immediately introduced videos where you repeat what someone is saying without any reference to roman script, only the Japanese. Visually, there is absolutely no way to make the phrases sink in to the brain unless you read Japanese. I understand that it needs to be done at some point but surely conversation lessons need to focus on that first - you can learn fluent Arabic, for example, without ever having to read or write it, and indeed it is easier to do that afterwards. Really frustrating and disappointing as it has stopped me in my tracks. Guess I'll just have to learn Hiragana first but I was hoping to advance much more quickly with the spoken language. Oh well I'll stop complaining now.

Learning how to read Hiragana is essential in learning how to communicate better. Romanji just doesn't cut it and isn't useful. It took me 20 days to learn Hiragana and that accelerated my overall Japanese learning soooo much. Katakana then took about another 15 days.

I've tried Duolingo and Memrise to learn Japanese, but both insist that you learn how to read and write which I'm not interested. As someone that wants to travel to Japan and experience the culture, by focusing only on the speaking and listening part you can open a lot of doors. If you focus on reading and writing it will take much longer.
